Areas of Practice
Ian was a founder member of St John’s Chambers and has enjoyed a successful practice in a number of fields until concentrating on personal injury, professional negligence, health and safety and insurance work approximately ten years ago.
His previous experience of a heavyweight criminal practice has developed and honed his advocacy skills that led to Chambers and Partners describing him as ‘good on his feet’.
Personal Injury
Ian has vast experience of a whole range of personal injury work. He has dealt with numerous catastrophic injury claims involving complex damage calculations regarding earnings, care and assistance for both Claimant and Defendant.
He has always had an extensive practice in employers’ liability cases and has a particular interest in occupational illness claims – especially asbestos related illness. He has also been involved in many stress at work claims and has lectured in both topics.
Ian also has considerable experience in road traffic claims, claims against Local Authorities and in product liability claims. He also has experience of holiday claims in respect of both claims for loss of enjoyment and accidents suffered whilst on holiday abroad.
Commercial Litigation/Insurance Law
Ian has broad experience of commercial claims with particular emphasis on insurance law. He has acted for insurers in a number of product liability cases including both damage to or caused by defective products and in respect of damage claimed in respect of negligent activity or workmanship to property. He also deals with claims including fraud, misrepresentation and non-disclosure, damage for fire and accidental death.
Professional Negligence
Ian has considerable experience in clinical negligence cases and has acted both for Claimants and Health Authorities. His work has included birth injury claims, including cerebral palsy and, forceps and brachial plexus birth injuries. He has also dealt with a large number of birth claims involving the mother including both psychological and gynaecological injuries. He has dealt with claims of significant misdiagnosis in a variety of areas. He has dealt with both the failure to diagnose cancer and the consequences of the misdiagnosis of cancer. His experience has encompassed all likely avenues of possible litigation. He has also dealt with numerous cases of dental negligence.
Ian also deals with cases of Solicitor’s negligence and insurance broker’s negligence.
Health and Safety and Regulatory Offences
Ian has considerable experience of Health and Safety cases having prosecuted and defended many cases involving death or potential public disasters. He also has experience of defending other cases of regulatory crime and is interested in all matters concerning corporate responsibility for death or serious injury. He has attended many inquests including several in respect of serious incidents including the collapse of the cradle at the Avonmouth Bridge.
