Areas of Practice
Alex practises in the chancery and commercial fields with a particularly strong expertise in property and probate matters.
His property practice encompasses the full range of real property issues, and includes landlord & tenant work, residential, commercial and agricultural. He has appeared in courts at all levels in relation to property disputes, including an appearance as junior counsel in the House of Lords in Bettison v. Langton [2002] 1 AC 27, a case concerning rights of common. He also has extensive experience of adjudications before HM Land Registry.
His probate practice includes both advisory and contentious work relating to trusts, wills and the administration of estates, including claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975. Alex is also regularly instructed in cases involving the Court of Protection.
In addition, Alex acts in a wide range of commercial litigation cases, as well as professional negligence cases relating to his specialist areas of practice, particularly against solicitors and surveyors.

- Bray (t/a Building Co) v. Bishop LTL 19 June 2009 – a Court of Appeal case concerning the court’s approach where the parties have settled all issues save for costs
- University of Plymouth v. European Language Centre [2009] EWCA Civ 784 – a Court of Appeal case as to whether informal negotiations had resulted in a binding contract
- Dutton v. Davis [2006] EWCA Civ 694, a Court of Appeal case concerning the sale and lease back of a property which was alleged to be in substance a mortgage.
- Thomas & Anor v Kent (2006), a Court of Appeal case concerning the proper construction of a will.
- Bettison v. Penter [2001] UKHL 24, a House of Lords case concerning rights of common where Alex appeared as junior counsel.
- Laine v. Cadwallader (2001) L&TR 8, a Court of Appeal case concerning an assured shorthold tenant’s liability to pay rent in lieu of notice.
