Background

Richard studied music at Bristol University before moving to London to study law. He completed his Bar Exams at City University, London (formerly the Inns of Court School of Law) and was assessed as ‘Outstanding’. Richard returned to the West Country and commenced pupillage with St John’s Chambers Family Practice Group in 2009. He was offered a tenancy one year later upon successful completion of pupillage.

Areas of Practice

Family Law

Richard has a broad practice encompassing all aspects of family law including ancillary relief, public and private law children work, claims under Schedule 1 Children Act 1989, injunctive relief where domestic violence is alleged, cohabitation disputes, Inheritance Act claims and enforcement issues arising from any of the above areas.

Richard is happy to act for any party to proceedings and in public law children work has experience representing parents, children and local authorities.

Richard is happy to advise clients in conference or in writing and endeavours to return all written work promptly and no later than within ten days of receipt.

Ancillary Relief and Claims on the Breakdown of Relationships

Richard acts in both small and large asset cases. He has experience of cases involving complex pension issues, farming, debts, insolvency and companies. He also undertakes cases involving claims between cohabitants, claims pursuant to Schedule 1 Children Act 1989 and claims under the Inheritance Act (Provision for Family and Dependents) 1975. Richard is happy to advise in conference or in writing with regards to both prospective and ongoing claims.

Private and Public Children Law

Richard’s practice in this area includes applications relating to contact, residence, enforcement orders, abduction, leave to remove and specific issues such as schooling. He also regularly acts in care proceedings.

Richard has experience of cases involving a wide range of issues including allegations of domestic violence and sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, chronic neglect and parents with mental health difficulties.

Richard has experience representing parents, grandparents and r.9.5 guardians in private law proceedings. In care proceedings Richard represents Local Authorities, parents, relatives and Guardians.

Domestic Violence

Richard regularly acts for parties seeking or resisting applications for Non Molestation Orders and Occupation Orders. He also acts in related matters such as applications for the transfer of tenancies.
