Gender-Based Violence in Kenya: Victims, Values & State Responses

Andrew Commins has spent the last four months volunteering as an Informal Justice Consultant for FIDA-Kenya, the Federation of Women Lawyers.

FIDA-Kenya is an NGO working to protect and promote women’s human rights and access to justice in Kenya, and strives for gender equality in all aspects of public and private life.

In the spirit of International Women’s Day (8th March 2010), Andrew has written an article which seeks to offer a perspective on state obligations to protect the human rights of its female citizens, with a focus on Kenya and the scourge of gender-based and domestic violence, a form of abuse prevalent throughout developing and ‘developed’ countries alike, and a constant source of protective litigation for family lawyers.
