Halliwell LLP Break-Up, Martha Maher Instructed in the High Court

On 20 July 2010 Martha Maher represented Shay Bannon and Dermot Power of BDO in The High Court in the application for an administration order in respect of Halliwells LLP and to seek the court’s approval for the sale of four pre-packaged parts of the business to other law firms. She was led by David Chivers QC and instructed by CMS Cameron McKenna following an initial direct access instruction from BDO.

This high profile case arose after Halliwells entered into a number of contractual commitments including leases for premises which left it with payment obligations that it could not fulfil after turnover fell following the departure of several partners and the economic downturn. Halliwells LLP were a national law firm who provided a range of legal services from offices in Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool and London. They had 116 partners and over 600 employees.

Martha’s involvement in this case highlights her expertise and experience in insolvency law including in the context of partnerships and more recently LLPs. Chambers UK describe her as having “highly detailed knowledge of insolvency law with a personable yet firm approach with clients.”
