Acting for regional and national law firms across the UK

St John’s Chambers works with law firms large and small across the entire country. Whilst most of our solicitor clients are based in the South West and Wales, many operate on a national basis with offices in key city locations. As a result, we receive instructions from law firms across the UK.

As a solicitor, whether you work with a large national law firm or a small West Country practice, we can provide the expertise and support you need. We are dedicated to providing a high-quality service to all solicitors in an approachable and pragmatic manner and were recently voted ‘Regional Set of the Year 2018’ by Legal 500 UK Bar, an award which endorses our position as a stand out national set.

In the barrister-solicitor relationship, we work closely with you and your clients to prepare the strongest possible case and keep all parties informed at every stage. As part of our commitment to meeting your requirements and those of your clients, we make sure all communications are timely, clear and concise.

Mediation

For cases where mediation is appropriate, we have a large team of qualified mediators available to assist in the capacity of adviser, advocate or mediator. Our modern, purpose-built office premises include rooms that are suitable for mediations. Read more.

Longstanding relationships and client recommendation

Instructions often arise through our longstanding relationships with law firm clients, but many new clients come to us through recommendation. If you are approaching us for the first time and you are unsure which barrister to use, one of our expert clerks will advise you which barrister would be best, based on the level of expertise and seniority required for that specific case. Solicitors often commend our clerks for their accuracy in recommending the right barrister for the case.

Expert clerking teams

Our friendly and approachable teams of experienced clerks can discuss your specific requirements and suggest the most suitable barrister. They are open and honest about the availability and suitability of counsel. For a full list of our clerks, please click here.

The clerks also welcome the opportunity to discuss fees with you and quote for any item of work. Please visit our Fees & Instructions page for more information.

Increasingly close working relationships

As a solicitor using our services, you’ll find we like to keep in touch. Our Chief Executive and Practice Group Managers carry out regular visits to our solicitor clients. This helps us to understand your needs and expectations and to make sure the services we provide meet the high standards we aim to achieve.

The changing legal market place has encouraged a closer working relationship between solicitor and barrister. Embracing this opportunity, we have developed a number of marketing and business initiatives, often conducted on a joint basis with our solicitor clients:

  • Joint seminars and conferences
  • Joint tendering
  • Outsourcing
  • Secondment
  • Pupil/Trainee placements
  • Public Access referrals

Professional Development and CPD Seminars

St John’s regularly hosts CPD accredited seminars and conferences, both in Chambers and at external venues. All our seminars provide important, up to date information on relevant topics and cover a wide range of legal disciplines. Our barristers also provide in-house training seminars for our solicitor clients. These are tailor-made, CPD accredited seminars which usually take place on your own premises.

Also, through the joint presentation of seminars and workshops, we can work with you to help develop your relationships with your clients.

Barristers at St John’s Chambers are regulated by the Bar Standards Board (BSB) and hold current practising certificates.
