The Legal 500 2024, Personal Injury

St John’s Chambers’ specialist Industrial Disease team is led by the sought-after Andrew McLaughlin who is a recommended specialist in Chambers UK’s spotlight table for industrial disease work. Members of the team range in call from 1975 through to 2009 and represent both claimants and defendants across all areas of disease litigation.

All members of the team are willing to travel to visit those clients who are suffering from terminal illnesses such as mesothelioma, and pride themselves in the prompt turnaround of advices and other such pieces of work in this often complex area of litigation where time can be of the essence.

Areas of expertise:

  • Asbestosis, mesothelioma and claims for lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis and silicosis
  • Occupational asthma
  • Stress at work claims
  • Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL)
  • Acoustic shock
  • Work-related upper limb disorders (WRULD)
  • Vibration white finger (VWF)
  • Hand arm vibration syndrome (HAVS)
  • Chemical, microbiological and other COSHH claims
  • Dermatitis

Recent notable cases include the successful representation of the defendant in the Court of Appeal case of Coventry University v Mian [2014] EWCA Civ 1275, an appeal against the decision of HHJ Barrie that the university was liable to Dr Mian, a senior lecturer, for work-related stress, defeating a huge claim for stress at work involving an 8-day High Court trial and acting on behalf of the Bank of New York Mellon in connection with a claim for in excess of £1 million by a former Head of Executive Office for stress at work, which was widely reported in the national press.
